The Achehnese Right
Thank you for letting me be the author. In my opinion, the people of Acheh do deserve to be free, because, to have freedom is everybody's right, and no one can take it away. As I have read from the news, the Achehnese have suffered so much. For example, the natural resources such as oil and gas were pull out without living benefit to the people in Acheh. Less than 1% go to the people and at least 99% go to Jakarta, the capital of indonesia. This is very unfair as if the property of Achehnese were robbed. Plus, I believe the indonesian government/millitary have done a lot of bad things to these people, they had violated so many human rights and have very bad history when it comes to humanataria. That's what I know, anyway thanks for giving me the chance...good day!

Indonesian army 'stole aid'
By Brendan Nicholson February 27, 2006
MEMBERS of the Indonesian army and police in tsumani-devastated Acheh Province have stolen building materials bought with international aid money, some it from Australia, according to an aid watchdog group.
In a report to be released today, the Australian non-government agency AID/WATCH also describes wasteful turf wars among aid agencies, serious environmental damage and poor consultation with local people.
The report says equipment as big as a mobile bridge has been stolen and some of the material has been found at an army base.
An Indonesian embassy spokesman said yesterday that if evidence was given to the ambassador, the allegations would be investigated. "It will go as high up as the President." The spokesman said the Indonesian Government was determined to make aid operations open and accountable.
The report says that of the $1 billion pledged by Prime Minister John Howard, just $156 million has so far been committed to tsunami-affected areas. The rest was going to projects not specifically related to the tsunami.
The Australian Government agency AusAID and the Australia-Indonesia partnership for Reconstruction and Development are identified as the least transparent organisations that are involved in the operation. An AusAID spokeswoman said her department would wait to see the report before commenting.
The report says competition between donor agencies looking for project areas has created turf wars and a reluctance to exchange information.
It says ineffective or inappropriate programs have led to substantial waste and there has been an alarming amount of environmental damage, particularly destruction of forests.
Donors often failed to monitor projects so there has been no crackdown on incompetence or corruption.

Who are The Achehnese?
The Achehnese belongs to a country named Acheh located on the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, Southeast Asian/Nusantara. Past spellings of its name include Nanggroe Acheh Darussalam, Atjeh and Achin.
It is thought to have been in Acheh where Islam was first established in Southeast Asia/Nusantara. In the early seventeenth century the Sultanate of Acheh was the most wealthy, powerful and cultivated empire in the Melacca Straits region. Acheh has a history of political independence and fierce resistance to control by outsiders, including the former Dutch colonists and the Indonesian government. Aceh has substantial natural resources, including oil a
nd gas- some estimates put Acheh gas reserves as being the largest in the world, which currently being pump up to Jakarta, Endon. Relative to most of Nusantara, it is a religiously conservative area.
Acheh was the closest point of land to the epicenter of the massive 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that devastated much of the western coast of the region, including part of the capital of Banda Acheh. 167,736 people, the overwhelming majority in Acheh, were killed or missing and 500,000 made homeless. This event helped trigger the so called peace agreement between the government of Indonesia and the Free Acheh Movement (GAM), mediated by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, with the signing of a MoU on August 15, 2005, which currently does not in favor to the Achehnese in greater percentage, especially in rural areas, even with the assistance of the European Union through the Acheh monitoring mission as of December 2005.
